The Liebherr family business was established in 1949 by Hans Liebherr. The great success of his first mobile, easy-to-assemble and affordable tower crane was the foundation on which the company flourished. Today Liebherr is not only one of the world’s leading manufacturers of construction machinery but is also an acknowledged supplier of technically innovative user-oriented products and services in numerous other fields. The company has now grown into a Group with approximately 38,000 employees in more than 130 companies across all continents.

The decentrally organized Liebherr Group is divided into company units of manageable size, operating independently. This is to ensure proximity to the customer and the ability to respond flexibly to market signals in global competition. Operative management of the production and sales companies for the individual product segments is in the hands of divisional control companies. The Group now encompasses ten product divisions. The Liebherr Group’s holding company is Liebherr-International AG in Bulle, Switzerland, which is entirely owned by members of the Liebherr family. The family business is currently being managed in the second generation by Dr. h.c. Isolde Liebherr and her brother Dr. h.c. Willi Liebherr. Sophie Albrecht, Jan Liebherr, Patricia Rüf and Stéfanie Wohlfarth have been actively involved in the management of individual divisions as representatives of the third generation since 2012 in order to help set the company’s course for the future.

The development and manufacturing of all the products and components of the Liebherr Group is distributed across 40 production company locations in 17 countries on four continents.

Liebherr technology is well established in the field of the structural and civil engineering. The range of construction machines encompasses complete model lines of tower cranes, mobile cranes, hydraulic excavators, mining trucks, hydraulic and cable-operated excavators, wheel loaders, crawler tractors and loaders, pipelayers, telescopic handlers, concrete mixing plants and truck mixers. However, Liebherr also has comprehensive product lines in many other areas. In the sphere of freight and cargo handling, these include ship cranes, floating cranes, offshore cranes, container cranes and mobile dock cranes, reachstackers, as well as other machines specially designed for efficient material handling. For the construction of machines and plants, Liebherr provides machine tools, automation systems, aircraft equipment and transportation technologies. And for the household, Liebherr offers a complete range of refrigerators and freezers.

In view of the high standards of quality that Liebherr demands of its products, the in-house control of key technologies is highly valued. To avoid having to rely on third parties for core competences, we therefore also develop and manufacture important components ourselves. These include, for example, the complete drive and control technology for construction machinery with the product groups in respect of the electrical system, electronics, transmission, hydraulics and diesel engine. Further examples are the hydraulic cylinder and anti-friction bearing component groups, which are increasingly also used in the products of other manufacturers.
